Bespoke marine electronics for a 62’ Cruiser racer

Large sailing yacht electronics project:

The new Auliana III, a Knierim 62’ cruiser/racer needed reliable, bespoke marine electronics for her owners to sail her double-handed easily and comfortably.

The key requirements for the complete electrical and electronics package for this large sailing yacht were:

  • Simplicity

  • Ease of use

  • Remote support

The marine electronics plan - 62’ sailing yacht

Osprey Technical’s design team, set about planning an electronics system for trouble-free sailing and living on board for her owners.

As the boat was designed to be sailed double-handed, all the sail controls were powered by hydraulics or electric motors.  The design plan focused on simplifying this large, complex system of electronics so that all the onboard systems are controlled by the simple touch of a button.

All the systems recommended were developed to make Auliana III a fast, comfortable and effortless boat to sail for her owners. In addition, a variety of control boxes and junction boxes were designed, built and tested at Osprey’s testing facility to ensure everything would work seamlessly.

Fundamental to the electronics design was installing a complete CZone digital switching system. This allows all power distribution, system controls, monitoring and alarms to be integrated into one simple user interface.

From the touch of a button, the owners can set the boat into ‘Sailing Mode’, by using one of the pre-set power modes configured for all the necessary scenarios.  The options range from Sailing Mode to Night Entertainment or Dock Unattended. The ability to simply switch between functions saves valuable time when powering up and shutting down the boat. In addition, they can be operated when away from the boat.

The CZone switching also enables the owners to have remote access to all the systems and data on their new yacht.  Osprey Technical also included its own proprietary Vessel Fusion software for the added back up of full remote access and support system. It means that Osprey’s technical team can securely access their technology on board, from anywhere around the globe. Third-party system suppliers, such as hydraulics and engine manufacturers, can also access their systems with a private Vessel Fusion access.

B&G chart plotters and Triton digital displays have been specified for navigation instruments. These offer highly accurate data and exceptional contrast and readability in all lighting conditions. An Integral E-Power system has been installed to generate all the power needed to drive the onboard electronics, in combination with a Mastervolt power storage system. This results in an extremely well-integrated solution from top to bottom.

The outcome:

As this was a custom, new build project, Auliana III’s owners were closely involved in the choice of and design of the marine electronics packages that best suited them. Throughout the process they were advised by Osprey’s knowledgeable, experienced electrical and electronics team to create their perfect bespoke system.

“This project has been a labour of love, allowing myself and the team at Osprey to put our own custom touches into the install and build a highly successful project for the owners to enjoy and use,” comments Joe, one of Osprey’s engineers. “The easy to use and intuitive CZone Multifunctional Display system allows them to control everything, when onboard or with remote access when away from the boat. This allows 24/7 access from where-ever they are.”
